In what was the final 7v7 tournament of the spring out in SoCal over the weekend, Jack Sears looked very good, capping a great spring/summer for him. We've said it multiple times but Sears is one of the more versatile quarterbacks out West with the ability to improvise and make plays with his legs, something you can't showcase in a 7v7 setting.
When you combine the improvements Sears has made as a pure passer to go with his natural athleticism and escapability, it's easy to see why his stock has risen so much this off-season. On Saturday, what stood out about Sears was his timing, anticipation and ability to get the ball out early and on time to his receivers, something we didn't see from the other QBs in the event.
He's a very smart quarterback, always poised and a natural leader. He throws with very good touch and accuracy and he's only scratching the surface of how good he can be. There is a ton of upside with Sears and we think he's going to be a tremendous player at the next level.
Sears has consistently said he plans to decide sometime in July and he reiterated that on Saturday. Now with only a week left in the month, we won't be surprised if his decision moves in to early August as it appears he's still wrestling with his choice.
One thing we gathered is the Duke Blue Devils, once thought to be more of a darkhorse candidate, is now a serious player. Sears had two very good visits to Durham and he has a strong comfort level with the coaches, players and the offense.
The USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins are battling as well in hopes of keeping Sears closer to home. The USC staff has made a big push with multiple coaches, including head coach Clay Helton, showing Sears plenty of attention.
New UCLA QB coach Marques Tuiasosopo has been relentless in his pursuit of Sears and the two have a very solid relationship. With a decision looming, the nation's top un-committed QB should be off the board very soon.
