Monday Afternoon Session

The quarterbacks continue to compete for the starting position and the starting running backs look sharp. There are more personnel updates and news on the injuries keeping players off the field...

As it will be with every afternoon session on days that have two practices, the Bruins came out in "shells," or just shoulder pads with shorts.

Personnel Update:

Every player who is suffering from any kind of "concussive syndrome," which includes Maurice Drew, Brandon Chillar, and Akil Harris, sat out Monday's afternoon practice.

Freshman wide receivers Antwuan Smith, Joe Cowan and Matt Slater continue to sit out practice due to minor injuries.

Brandon Chillar and Spencer Havner, who both sat out Monday's afternoon session, technically switched positions. Chillar will be officially the weakside linebacker and Havner will be the strongside, but both, according to the coaches, will line up at different times over the tight end.

Scrimmage Notes:

Drew Olson and Matt Moore continue to compete for the starting quarterback position, and neither distanced themselves from the other in the afternoon practice. Moore might have had slightly more reps and threw slightly less bad balls, but it was very close between the two.

The receivers and tight ends continue to have the dropsies – with Ryan Smith, the wide receiver who looks to be the frontrunner for the open starting position opposite Craig Bragg, dropping a couple of passes today.

Idris Moss, the redshirt freshman receiver continues to impress, making nice grabs and looking elusive after the catch. He's definitely among the top five receivers since the team has been camping at Cal State Fullerton.

Craig Bragg continues to look like a potential All-American receiver, with great hands and great routes, and a great ability to advance the ball after the catch.

Sophomore fullback J.D. Groves looked good running and catching the ball out of the backfield. On one play he he weathered a couple of very big hits and stayed on his feet.

The starting running back tandem of Tyler Ebell and Manuel White looked particularly good today, with Ebell breaking off some quick, 10-yarder gainers, and White looking terrific on many runs and passes. On one particular screen, White followed his blockers well to break off a good, potentially 30-yard gain.

On defense, senior defensive back continues to look solid, and has been filling in as the nickel back while Nnamdi Ohaeri has been out.

Back-up cornerbacks Jebiaus Brown and Matt Cassel both had moments in coverage today.

Walkon weakside linebacker Ben Lorier worked with the first team defense while Havner/Chillar sat out. Patrick Pierre-Louis worked with the first team in the morning session.

Jarrad Page had a huge hit in destroying a running play.

A Note on Wednesday Practice: The afternoon session on Wednesday has been re-scheduled from 3:00-5:00 p.m. to 7:30-9 p.m.
