Breaking Down '19 QB J.T Daniels' Impressive Season Opener

Sep. 2 -- Mater Dei (Calif.) Santa Ana sophomore quarterback J.T. Daniels had a huge opening game for the Monarchs over the weekend. Here's a closer look...

Although just a sophomore, it's not a stretch to say J.T. Daniels is already one of the top five quarterback prospects out West, regardless of class.

The Monarchs dismantled Bishop Amat on Friday 63-14 and Daniels was on fire from the start completing 18-21 passes for 370 yards and six touchdowns. He played just one drive in the third quarter before calling it a night and showed all the skills that have made him such a highly coveted prospect.

Evaluation Notes:

Daniels hit several deep balls and shows not just the arm strength needed to get the ball down the field but his touch and timing was incredible. He has a great feel in the pocket and his subtle movement with his feet where he's able to cooly slide away from pressure but stay on balance and make a throw is college level right now.

Everyone will notice the zip on his passes but what stands out even more is Daniels' ability to throw with great anticipation and get the ball out to his receivers early so they can make a play after the catch. He's a pure pocket passer right now but shows improvement in his overall quickness and mobility.

He's able to get rid of the ball so quickly and showed plenty of toughness standing in the pocket until the last minute to get a throw off, despite having a defender taking a clean shot at him. Daniels spread the ball all around and has arguably the deepest group of receivers, not just out west but maybe in the country.  The Monarchs have five legitimate BCS prospects at receiver only one of them is a senior.

Daniels' polish, maturity, pocket sense and feel for the position is so advanced right now that it's hard to believe he still has two more years after this one before he hits college. He's an incredibly smart kid but also likable and a very good teammate. If he continues to develop the way he has shown the last year and a half, he'll be in the running for top overall recruit in the 2019 class.

Recruiting Update:

Daniels is nearing double digit scholarship offers and should have his choice of any school in the country when he's ready to decide. He has already visited Notre DameStanford and USC and all but the Cardinal have offered. Those three schools could have the inside track but it's early and schools like Arizona State,  Cal,  UCLA  and  Washington  have all offered and will make a push in his recruitment as well.
