UCLA Prospect Recap: Week One

Sept. 6 -- We look at how UCLA prospects did in week one of the high school football season...

***Game of the Week:***  Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy def. Corona (Calif.) Centennial, 50-49

In an instant classic, IMG scored a touchdown with 12 seconds left, a 38-yard reception by UCLA target Brian Hightower, the former Calabasas receiver, then IMG went for two and converted to sneak past Centennial.  Hightower, who spent time on the UCLA campus this summer, had three catches for 125 yards, including the touchdown that set up the winning 2-pointer.  UCLA commit Jaylan Shaw had a handful of tackles and a crushing hit that saved a touchdown, but was curiously called a penalty, in the loss.  2018 4-star quarterback Tanner McKee was 26-for-44 for 374 yards with three touchdown passes and two picks in the loss.

Santa Anta (Calif.) Mater Dei def. Lakewood (Calif.) Mayfair, 63-0

A stout Monarchs defense, led by UCLA commit Quentin Lake, had no problem with the Monsoons and shut them out, their second straight week scoring 63 points.  Lake had a pair of pass breakups in just a half of play.  Mater Dei 2019 quarterback J.T. Daniels was 13-for-18 for 366 yards and six touchdowns and 2018 Bruin targets Nikko Remigio and Amon-Ra St. Brown both had three catches for over 100 yards, St. Brown scoring two touchdowns.

Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman def. Cocoa (Fla.), 46-10

Scout’s defending national champions, Bishop Gorman, set up their big game against St. John Bosco with an out-of-state blowout of Cocoa.  UCLA 2018 tight end prospect Brevin Jordan had a 42-yard touchdown on a Hail Mary as the first half expired to blow things open and had 66 yards receiving overall.  Dorian Thompson-Robinson had two catches playing receiver while Bubba Bolden had a pair of tackles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Milpitas (Calif.) def. Antioch (Calif.), 47-22

Antioch got 201 yards on 33 carries and a pair of touchdowns from the No. 1 player in the country, Najee Harris, but it wasn't enough for them to beat Milpitas.
