UCLA Defensive Lineman Jacob Tuioti-Mariner Talks Versatility

Sept. 13 -- UCLA defensive lineman Jacob Tuioti-Mariner spoke Tuesday about his ability to play multiple positions along the front, his injury scare in camp and more...

On the defense so far:

Obviously we want to try and improve on every area we can. We're trying to improve, we are improving, that's what practice and film is for. I feel like the defense is working in an upward position but there are always to improve.

On what they need to improve on:

Gap control and hand placement. Gap control basically for the defensive line. I know the back of us, the secondary and backers will take care of their jobs. I can only speak for the defensive line, from what I see in the film room, it's gap control.

On playing a number of positions:

You have to do what you have to do, whatever they need you to play, you accept the responsibility, that's what football is about. They put the game plan out there, we go across the lines and try to execute. I try to study all four positions on the defensive line.

On getting Eddie Vanderdoes and Takk McKinley back:

It's always great to have those guys. Good players to play with. The guys we have right now, I'm comfortable with, but getting Eddie and Takk is a blessing.

On his bout with appendicitis:

I was just stretching and I felt a pain in my lower abdomen.  I thought it was a cramp at first, so I started stretching. It just happened.  I just tried to do the antibiotics to see how'd that go.  It's gone, so I'm happy I took the antibiotics way, but lets hope it doesn't come back.
