Early options for Top 15 2019 center Onyeka Okongwu

Oct. 29 -- Scout's 13th ranked 2019 prospect, Onyeka Okongwu, has several early options. Where does the four-star center's recruitment stand?

One of the West Coast’s top prospects in the 2019 class comes from Chino Hills (Calif.) in Onyeka Okongwu.

The 6-foot-8, 235-pound center is a defensive specialist due to his tremendous feel as a shot blocker, while he’s also a talented rebounder and improving scorer.

“I’m a defender; I like getting rebounds and blocking shots,” Okongwu said. “I have a nice midrange jumper and hook shots. I’m working on my post work and getting my handle tighter while getting quicker and stronger.”

UCLA and USC were the first two offers for Okongwu, who is Scout’s 13th ranked prospect in his class.

“With UCLA I like the NBA players that come out of the school,” he said. “They have a tradition of winning. It would be an honor to go there.

“I’ve just loved USC my whole life. I’m a Trojan boy. I’ve been a USC fan ever since I was a little boy living in L.A. I love the way they play basketball and they’re getting better.”

While several other schools have followed suit with offers, Okongwu listed Arizona State, Stanford, Alabama and Arizona amongst the other schools he’s being heavily recruited by.

“James Harden came out of Arizona State and you never know, another great player could come out of there too,” said Okongwu. “I’m a smart kid and it would be an honor to go to Stanford for the academics.

“Alabama is the SEC and it’s a great conference and they’re recruiting me pretty hard. I might visit Arizona soon; they’re one of the best schools in the Pac-12.”

It’s early in Okongwu’s recruitment but style of play will be important for him.

“I’m looking for a place that plays like a team and plays good defense,” he said.
