With UCLA's season over, it gives the UCLA coaches a unique opportunity to get out on the road and see 2017 targets.
UCLA head coach Jim Mora, defensive line coach Angus McClure, defensive coordinator Tom Bradley and defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin were in the home of UCLA-committed five-star defensive end Jaelan Phillips last night.
Sunday Mora and Martin also stopped in to see Rancho Cucamonga four-star cornerback prospect Thomas Graham.
Mora, Bradley and linebackers coach Scott White are on a private plane Monday to Dallas – more specifically Plano, Texas, to see the #1 inside linebacker in the nation, Anthony Hines of Plano East.
Hines will announce his decision this Friday, Dec. 2nd, at 12:00 CST. It’s apparently between UCLA and Texas A&M, who had an in-home visit with Hines Sunday. Florida and Penn State are also expected to pay a visit to the Hines household sometime this week.
McClure is spending some time in his recruiting region of Northern California Monday. With UCLA tight ends coach Rip Sherer, they saw four-star tight end Josh Falo of Sacramento Inderkum at his high school, and will have an in-home visit with UCLA-committed four-star tight end Jimmy Jaggers of Roseville. McClure and offensive line coach Adrian Klemm will have an in-home visit with offensive line prospect Orlando Umana of Sacramento Grant; and McClure will drop in on four-star defensive end D.J. Johnson of Sacramento Burbank, whom McClure has recruited for a long time but is verbally committed to Miami.
We had a sighting of Scott White at the high school of Baron Browning, the five-star linebacker from Kennendale (Tex.). Browning just officially visited Ohio State last weekend for its big win over Michigan, but the feeling lately is that Alabama is the leader, with UCLA right there with those two programs. Browning will announce his decision Tuesday, and Texas sources are saying he’s pretty overwhelmed right now and will probably shut it down until then.
White is expected for an in-home visit with four-star LB Rahyme Johnson from Los Angeles Salesian Tuesday. Johnson took an official visit to Oregon State this weekend, but the word is still that UCLA leads for the one-time UCLA commitment. He visited UCLA’s practice with teammate, four-star DB Deommodore Lenoir, last week. UCLA is apparently back in it with Lenoir, an Oregon verbal commitment.
White is expected at Claremont High to check in on big-time 2018 target Solomon Tuliaupupu Tuesday, and then we’ve also heard that there’s a plan for him to visit Addison Gumbs, the four-star 2017 linebacker prospect from Hayward (Calif.) Stellar Prep. Gumbs was thought to be a long-time UCLA lean before verbally committing to Oklahoma in August. We’re hearing that there is still a chance with Gumbs.
UCLA offensive line coach Adrian Klemm was in the home of UCLA-committed offensive lineman Kanan Ray from Chatsworth Sierra Canyon Sunday night.
Klemm spent time at the school of UCLA’s top OL target, Aaron Banks, from El Cerrito, today. Arizona State and Oregon visited him, too, while Banks has set an announcement date of Dec. 9th, and the thought is that he’s still leaning to Notre Dame. He was supposed to take an unofficial visit to UCLA a few weeks ago but the story is that his high school team lost that weekend and he was too depressed to go. As we said above, Klemm will join McClure to see Umana for his in-home visit Monday night. Apparently, Klemm played at Hawaii with a coach at Sacramento Grant, so there’s a connection. We have word that Klemm is expected to visit UCLA-committed Jaxson Kirkland from Portland (Ore.) Jesuit tomorrow, and then take a swing to the east coast to see recent offeree, Joshua Fedd-Jackson from Montvale (N.J.) St. Joseph’s, Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) prospect Jerry Drake and Zack Sweeney from Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas Wednesday. UCLA hasn’t yet offered Sweeney and is looking at him as a center. He’s expected to also visit recent offeree, Jax Wacaser, from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro Thursday.
We’re starting to think that UCLA is backing away from Jalen McKenzie, the Concord Clayton Valley prospect. There could also be some other shifts in direction in offensive line recruiting that we can’t go into details about at this stage, but there could be some surprises.
Added 11/28, 8:00 p.m.
UCLA coaches will be in the home of Arizona Western JC cornerback Keisean Nixon Tuesday.
UCLA coaches will be in the home of New Jersey DT Dalyn Wade-Perry this week, and he'll officially visit Dec. 9th.
As we get more information on where the UCLA coaches will be this week, we’ll report it. They’ll all be back in Westwood for the official visit weekend starting Friday.
