One of the best 2018 prospects at the Nike Extravaganza this past weekend was San Diego (Calif.) St. Augustine standout Taeshon Cherry.
Heading into his match up with Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, Cherry was playing with confidence and momentum from a promising junior season. That promise showed on a big stage, as Cherry pumped in 24 points and played with tremendous confidence.
Cherry, who stands nearly 6-foot-8, was extremely effective on the offensive end of the floor. Cherry is versatile on that end of the floor and able to stretch the floor with his jump shot. Cherry buried five three-pointers and was also effective from mid-range, where he knocked down a pair of shots.
Cherry, who ranks No. 33 overall, is an intriguing long-term prospect because of size, length and skill level. His improved consistency from three-point land only accentuates that.
Q&A with Taeshon Cherry
How do you think you played today?
Good. At first the ball wasn’t dropping but I had to keep my composure in the locker room and coach told me to keep shooting the ball and once one fell I was just like, “I got to keep shooting, I got to keep shooting” and once two fell I was like, “man, this is going in going in” and then everything just kept falling and falling for me. I just wanted to win badly.
You seem much more confident shooting the ball, is that a fair assessment? What do you think that stems from?
Yeah, of course… I broke my hand in the Fall and I was just like, “I got to get back, I got to get back” and once I got out of the cast I started to work on my shot and put in hours and hours working on my shot, just countless hours of reps and everything just started falling more and more and coach told me, “be confident when you shoot the ball” and my shot was looking great, shooting 52% on the season so I guess I’m shooting it good from the 3 point line.
What do you see yourself position wise?
I think I can be a 3, 4 or 5 and I think I can play the 2. I just got to get my handle right. Im watching a lot of Anthony Davis, LeBron, I just watch everybody and I’m like “I got to be like that, I got to be like that, and I got to have the shot, I got to have the jumper, I got to be quicker off the dribble too.” If I want to be an NBA or high major basketball player.
Have they all offered?
You going to go to any of these campuses?
Yeah, I think I am going to A&M soon, Gonzaga, definitely Arizona, I went to UCLA 2 weeks ago and USC a couple of weeks ago too and that’s kind of it right now.
How was that trip to UCLA?
It was great, great atmosphere, they played Arizona so it was a great atmosphere even though they lost. They’re a great team. Lonzo is a great player, TJ is from San Diego so he is trying to push me to go there to be a Bruin but they’re a great team, they’re a great program, Coach Alford is a great guy.
What about USC?
They’re great. I’ve known coach [Tony] Bland since I was a little kid. He’s very bright but he talks to me a lot and tells me how he wants me to play.
