Focus 2018: UCLA Defensive Ends Recruiting Watch List

Feb. 9 -- We take an early look at the top targets at defensive end for UCLA's 2018 class and some other names to know...

So what does UCLA do for an encore?

After signing the No. 1 defensive end prospect in the country in 2017 in Redlands (Calif.) East Valley five-star Jaelan Phillips, the Bruins want to bring in at least one pass-rusher but would certainly love to bring in two ends in this class.

With Phillips coming in, the expectation is for him to play early.  So UCLA will need to get another top-tier pass-rusher in this class to help build some depth.

While the West is down across the defensive line in the 2018 class, there are still some terrific prospects, and some with high interest in UCLA.

Throw in Angus McClure doing the recruiting, and it gives fans confidence that defensive end recruiting will continue to be fruitful.

One of UCLA's earliest offers was to Elijah Wade.

UCLA got a chance to see Wade when the coaches went to watch Greg Rogers, his Arbor View teammate, and the two are pretty close. In fact, Rogers said he'll be recruiting Wade to join him in Westwood.

The top end in Southern California is Jeremiah Martin from San Bernardino.  McClure and Demetrice Martin teamed up on an IE pass-rusher a year ago to great success, so expect that tandem to recruit Martin as well. Speaking of tandems, Martin told Scout at the U.S. Army Combine that he is often compared to Takk McKinley and Jaelan Phillips and those are the two players he looks up to the most.

Abdul-Malik McClain is a player we're eager to see this spring but he flashes on film as a pass-rusher.  He's more likely to end up a hybrid rush-end type, at only about 225, but he has quickness off the ball.

Cameron Latu was a BYU commit but as his recruitment has taken off, he's opened things up and specifically cited UCLA as a school he's very interested in.

UCLA was the first school to offer Draco Bynum, doing so in October, and he's since been offered by Oregon and USC.

While Adam Plant doesn't have a UCLA offer yet, it wouldn't be a surprise to see UCLA pursue him, especially since they'll be spending a lot of time recruiting other top Gorman prospects.
