Focus 2018: UCLA Safety Recruiting Watch List

Feb. 15 -- We take an early look at the top targets at safety for UCLA's 2018 class and some other names to know...

With an excellent defensive back class signed this month, UCLA still didn't land a true safety.

However, we think signee Quentin Lake ends up at safety, as UCLA defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin has a history of being able to switch corners to safety.

That said, we expect UCLA to focus on landing at least one, if not two pure safeties in this class.

Few players emerged like Stephan Blaylock did this past fall. While teammate Jaiden Woodbey got much of the attention, many close to the Bosco program think that Blaylock is the better safety of the two (and Woodbey is growing into a linebacker anyhow).

The Bruins have been all over Blaylock and would love to get an early commitment from him.

UCLA will keep an eye on Aashari Crosswell, the Hawkins safety, but it's unlikely they'll really push for him given that Hawkins isn't necessarily sending fellas on to Westwood.

Over the weekend, Martin offered Steve Stephens from Fresno (Calif.) Edison and UCLA has had some great success historically landing defensive backs from Edison.

The Florida prospect Houston Griffith was offered by UCLA in December and raved about the Bruins and the offer, and plans to visit this spring.

Martin has offered a few safeties out of Texas like DeMarvion OvershownCameron Jones and Leon O'Neal.

We anticipate more UCLA safety targets will pop up during the spring that Martin will pursue. With Martin's recruiting region being the Inland Empire, we expect he'll also be keeping a close eye on Jhevon Hill and Julius Irvin, the son of former Ram Leroy Irvin.
