The Bruins were the first to offer the four-star and the unofficial visit offered him an opportunity to meet linebackers coach Scott White in person for the first time
"The UCLA unofficial was really good, I really liked it and it was a nice trip," said Hughes. "I got to see all the new stuff they're building and they showed us how it is going to come together and be really great. The lockers rooms are going to be really nice."
Hughes was offered by head coach Jim Mora after Mora saw him play when recruiting Darnay Holmes, along with defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin.
Martin and Angus McClure, the area recruiter for Ventura County and the Valley, had been recruiting Hughes, but he said White would be taking over.
"I got to meet with Coach Angus, Coach Meat and Coach Scott and really get a feel for the program and how they want to use me in their defense and I got to see how interested they are in me and I really liked it," said Hughes. "It was my first time really getting to sit down with him. I'd met Coach Meat a couple times and Coach Angus, but this was my first time meeting with Coach White. He's taking the lead now cause he's the linebackers coach and I really liked him. He likes me for outside linebacker and likes the way I get to the quarterback. We talked about my technique and getting it down a little more and he said he wants me to use more moves and put them in my arsenal and everything would be a-ok."
Hughes said that while he didn't get to see Holmes on the visit, he hears from him often and sees him at home.
"I didn't get to see Darnay on the trip, but he comes up to Calabasas a lot and works out and I talk to him and he's asking me when I'll commit and when I'm coming to UCLA," said Hughes.
But Hughes said a decision isn't coming anytime soon.
"I will take as much time as I need and I'm not in any rush to pick a school," said Hughes. "I really want to find a school that is home to me and feels like family and that I can stay in the area forever. I definitely want to take some officials."
And he thinks more could be close.
Hughes plans to see a number of schools later in spring.
"I'll visit Oregon State on March 18th, then get out to Washington and Nebraska in April and Washington State on April 21," said Hughes.
Hughes will be at The Opening Los Angeles regional this weekend.
