Breland Brandt answered questions from the media after practice Wednesday.
On whether he found out what team he is on for the spring game
Yeah, I’m on white.
On whether he likes the way the white team’s roster is looking
Oh yea, I think we’ll be fine. I mean, all of us can play, all of us know what we’re doing. So it’s just a matter of going out there and competing.
On which players he will be teamed up with
At backer, it’s me, Kenny and I believe Krys (Barnes). At the front line, I’m not too sure. I know Jaelan Phillips is one of them and Gozie (Chigozie Nnoruka). That’s all I really know right now.
On whether he had any say in who was on his team
No, we just found out randomly.
So no lobbying for any player you wanted?
On how spring camp is going so far
I think it’s been pretty good. I feel like I’ve gotten better every day, I’ve been working with coach White and the other backers just to progress and to get one percent better.
On what specific improvements he’s made in spring
I think the biggest thing for me was the playbook. When I came in last spring, obviously I had no idea what to do. This year I know exactly what I need to do, where I need to be, where I need to go. That’s added to my confidence on the field and it’s helped me play better.
On whether it will help this year to have the same coaches back from last year
Yeah, definitely. I think we’ve grown into a tight-knit group at backer, and I think that will definitely help us for the upcoming season and the upcoming camp.
On what it’s been like transitioning from WILL to SAM linebacker
It’s been real good. I’ve been with Scotty, Scotty’s been great at teaching me all the nuances that I need to do. I’ve been talking to Cam Judge, the previous SAM backer, and he’s shown me a lot of things. Just going out here and getting better one percent every day has just been my biggest goal, and I feel like I’ve accomplished that so far.
On the differences between the SAM and the WILL
Yeah, I mean, at the end of the day, playing backer is backer. You find ball and you go hit the ball. So as long as you know your little details, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.
On his height and weight right now
Right now I’m 230, 6’4”
On how much he weighed coming in to UCLA
Like 210 maybe. Barely 210, 212.
On his target weight
I’m trying to get to 240. Hopefully by fall camp I’ll be at or close to 240. And that will eb solid for me.
On getting more reps because DeChaun Holiday has been injured
I mean, I feel like I would have developed whether DeChaun was here or not. Coach White does a great job of making sure that all of us get reps and all of us have time. So whether DeChaun was here, I would have been learning from him or learning from coach White. So at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter.
