UCLA Spring Practice Report: Day 14

Apr. 27 -- Ahead of Saturday's spring game at Drake Stadium, UCLA held a light practice Thursday with several walk-through periods and mostly half-speed reps...

In preparation for the spring game in a couple days, UCLA held its lightest and shortest practice of the spring Thursday.

There was a brief 7-on-7 portion followed by kickoff drills and then an extended 11-on-11 period before the entire team huddled and players broke off into their respective squads for Saturday's scrimmage. Each side walked through situations and even rehearsed their alignments for the pregame national anthem.

From what we could gather when players split up, it seemed that the rosters were mixed well. There were some ones lined up alongside some twos, and there didn't appear to be a noticeable disparity between Team Blue and Team White.

For a sampling of the lineup we'd expect to see Saturday afternoon, this is what the Team Blue offense looked like:

QB - Josh RosenMatt Lynch

RB - Sotonye JamaboNate Starks

FB - Giovanni Gentosi

TE - Caleb WilsonDevin Asiasi

WR - Darren AndrewsEldridge MassingtonTheo Howard

OL - Kolton MillerJosh Wariboko-AlaliScott QuessenberryPaco PerezKenny Lacy

And the Team White defense they'll face:

Players weren't in pads Thursday, so it made for a lot of non-contact situations and more on-air scenarios. Asiasi might have shined the brightest on the offensive side, continuing his impressive spring with a few receptions up the middle. On one play, Asiasi wiggled past Barnes and Lokeni Toailoa to get open and catch a laser from Rosen up the seam. Earlier during the 7-on-7 session, Asiasi and Rosen again hooked up for a long completion over the top. For as big as he is, Asiasi is nimble enough to maneuver through traffic and gain separation easily.

Alex Van Dyke, who is on Team White along with Jordan LasleyDemetric Felton and Jordan Wilson, also made a couple nice receptions during 7-on-7, hugging the sideline and using his size advantage to beat corners for the ball. We know it's been written before, but Van Dyke appears to be catching the football more comfortably this spring.

Theo Howard and Adewale Omotosho had a good day catching the ball, too. On back-to-back plays during the team period, Omotosho and Howard did well to break on comeback routes before turning up field with possession. Howard later had an impressive catch on a deep post route against Riley that would have gone for a score.

-- Cornerback Nathan Meadors appeared to be limited, doing conditioning work with the training staff, but did participate in walk-throughs so it appears that he'll be a go for Saturday...

-- Tight end Austin Roberts limped his way through most of practice, but didn't come out...

-- No sight of freshman tight end Jimmy Jaggers, who left Monday's practice with a trainer holding his helmet. It appears unlikely that he'll play Saturday...

-- Linebackers coach Scott White told reporters he's supposed to meet with Dechaun Holiday, who underwent shoulder surgery earlier this week, to find out a recovery timetable. White said he expects Holiday to be ready to go for fall camp and, for now, wants him focusing on his offseason weight program and academics...

-- Mique Juarez had a highlight play when he blitzed off the left edge to get to Devon Modster during 11-on-11. White said Juarez has been getting better every practice and, though he still needs to lose some weight, should see the field this fall...

-- Samuel probably had the defensive play of the session, breaking quickly on an out route to get his hand on the ball and erase what would have been a first-down completion from Rosen to Lasley. Samuel has stepped up nicely since Denzel Fisher was sidelined with an elbow injury...

-- Brandon StephensDarnay Holmes and Damian Alloway got reps, in that order, during kick return drills...

-- Jim Mora and Angus McClure, as expected, were not present at practice. They're in Philadelphia to accompany Takkarist McKinley at the NFL Draft...

-- UCLA kicks off its spring game Saturday at 1 p.m. in Drake Stadium.
