Q&A With 2018 No. 1 Prospect & UCLA Target Marvin Bagley

May 15, EMERSON, Ga. -- Marvin Bagley, the top player in the 2018 class, is averaging 25.1 points, 14.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks a game in the Nike EYBL circuit. Following his Sunday EYBL game, Bagley -- whom UCLA is pursuing hotly -- sat down with Scout.com for a Q&A about his game and recruiting...

Evan Daniels: How has the summer been going for you?
Marvin Bagley: “I think great, just trying to get better as a player, trying to do whatever I can to make my team better. Just keep improving every chance I get.

You feel any pressure being known as the top guy in the 2018 class?
Not really. I‘m fully in control of what I can control and that’s working hard and making sure I’m ready to go when I step on the court but you know we just got to win. That’s the only thing we’re worried about right now is trying to get a win. We haven’t got one yet, we’re still trying to work hard to get that.

Do you think how you’re playing individually is living up to expectations?
I feel like I’m playing well but at the end of the day, we’re losing so all that goes down the drain when you think about that. So you got to try to figure out how to do that and win at the same time and let everything else take care of itself. We just got to get some wins.

I’ve watched your game progress and develop over the last two years, describe where your game is at right now…
I want to be able to do it all. Rebounding, scoring the ball, passing the ball, defense, I want to be able to affect the game if I’m not scoring. To be able to do it I a different way. That’s what I try to control and try to work on as part of my game.

How is the recruiting process going for you?
“It’s going great. It’s kind of quiet right now. A couple coaches text me every now and then, but I’m not really trying to make a decision right now so it’s quiet.”

Where are you at in terms of schools?
“It’s 6. You know I’m not really going to get into it still. I’m going to wait until the sessions are over and then I’ll take a couple of visits to see how I feel and go from there.”

Have you taken any unofficial visits?
Actually I went to USC because of my brother so I went with them before I added them on my list. I really liked their campus and the facilities so I added them in but that’s the only place I went to.

What did you think of USC?
“I like it. It seems like it’s a quiet place, a calm place. When they were taking us around the campus, I got a good feeling about it, the people were nice, it was just a good environment.”

To go with USC, you’re also close to UCLA with your move to the Los Angeles area … What’s your take on the Bruins?
“They been recruiting me. It’s a great school. They have a great tradition, a lot of great players came through that school, great things at the level that I’m trying to get to so it’s obviously a great place and a great school. They’re in the tournament so I could see myself getting better there.”

Of the schools recruiting you and from watching college basketball this season, did any particular school or play style stand out to you in terms of something that might interest you?
“I just like how Kentucky runs. I like how they play, they get out and go and it’s fun to watch. It’s exciting so I like watching them.”

Do you know any schools that you’re going to visit?
“I don’t have an idea yet. I’m trying to take it day by day, focus on tomorrow and whatever happens in the future happens.”

If you look at the 2017 class, players like Mo Bamba and Trevon Duval still haven’t decision, do think you’ll wait like that or is your decision something you want to knock out early?
“I got an idea, I want to get it out of the way so I don’t have to deal with it during senior year during the season. I can just focus on the team and getting wins and getting better. For me personally, I want to make a decision before senior year is big for me.”
