The three-star tight end from Atlanta (Ga.) Marist School is set to visit the Bruins today with his parents, to pick up his sister who is a UCLA student after she finishes her finals, but also to check in with the UCLA coaches. FizPatrick has visited UCLA before to see his sister, so the familiarity with the program has made the Pac-12 school a realistic destination, even with all the national recruiting attention he's been getting. He says this could be a case where the cross-country location won't play a factor.
"I'd love to go to school with my sister," FitzPatrick told Bruin Report Online ahead of his trip. "We talk about it all the time. She came down on the field at the Rose Bowl with me when we visited for the USC game last year.
"(UCLA) is up there."
The 6-foot-7, 225-pound FitzPatrick visited Vanderbilt last week and holds offers from several other big-name programs, including Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Yet, despite that Southern appeal, FitzPatrick said he has built a good connection at UCLA that has made the Bruins a serious suitor.
"I've talked to coach Rip (Scherer) and he's saying how I'll fit into their offense," FitzPatrick said. "Coach (Jedd) Fisch has talked to me about how he's going to bring his schemes from Michigan over to UCLA for the tight ends. I've visited a couple times and I'm familiar with the campus. Coach (Jim) Mora and coach Rip spent time showing me around the new facilities last time.
"I plan on studying business and I was able to sit down with an academic advisor, too."
FitzPatrick doesn't have any other visits planned at the moment but does have a timeframe for a decision in mind.
"Some time this summer," he said.
