Vickiel Vaughn, 6-1, 185, Plano (Tex.) West, might not have registered great stats at the Nike Camp last spring, but on the field he's definitely a football player.
College coaches have recognized that, too. Vaughn is getting recruited by Oklahoma, Notre Dame, UCLA, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Indiana and Michigan State.
Vaughn said, though, that right now, he's still pretty open and is thinking about what schools he wants to visit officially. "I'll have my top five by December and I'll know more then," he said. "Right now, I'm focusing on my football season, on my team, on helping my team. Then when the season's done, I can focus more on recruiting. I'll have a top three by January, then I'll probably decide from there."
Vaughn said he's visited many of his schools unofficially. "I've been to Arkansas. I took two unofficial visits. I went to a game and to campus. I went to Oklahoma. I've been to UCLA, during the summer for a basketball tournament."
Is there a school he's pretty certain he'll visit officially? "It's really up in the air. I'm pretty sure I'll visit Notre Dame in December. But I'm still arranging them."
Vaughn said he wants to go somewhere he can make an immediate impact. "All I want is a chance to go in as a freshman and get my chance to play," he said.
The big-hitting safety prospect also said he'd prefer to go away to school. "You have to go away from home sometime, why not when you go to college?"
Vaughn, a pretty good guard in basketball, said he wouldn't mind playing both sports in college. "My first priority is getting an education, then football. But if they let me play basketball I'd like to at least try."
Vaugn said he has a 3.0 GPA, a 960 on his SAT, and a 21 on his ACT, but his mom wants him take the tests again to improve his score.
