Bruins Land Commitment #11

UCLA gets a much-needed commitment to shore up the near-future depth of the offensive line, from a prospect who was getting Pac-10 attention...

It's rare that UCLA dips in to the JC ranks to pluck a recruit, and even rarer when the Bruins pick someone on the offensive line.

But Santa Ana (Calif.) College OL Marc Villafuerte, 6-4, 300, serves as a changeup from the typical recruiting strategy, and with his commitment on Monday night, gives UCLA much-needed help on the offensive line.

"He committed last night to UCLA," said Santa Ana College coach Geoff Jones.

A two-time All-Century League player at Anaheim (Calif.) Canyon High and an all-CIF performer as well, Villafuerte initially signed with Santa Ana College during the 2002 signing period.

Entering Santa Ana as a freshman in 2002, Villafuerte sat out that season after tearing his ACL. While he spent the rest of the year recovering, he focused on his academics.

When the 2003 season came around, a fully recovered Villafuerte was ready to go, and his play early on, plus the upside he held, got him attention from schools ranging from Ohio State to UCLA.

A preseason JC Gridwire All-American "One To Watch," Villafuerte has four years to play three at UCLA.
