Pennsylvania Tight End Liked Visit

UCLA went to Pennsylvania in recent years to get a tight end (Keith Carter), and they very well could do it again with Lacaster, Pennsylvania's Ryan Purvis. The prospect took an official visit to UCLA and talks about the trip...

With already one tight end from Pennsylvania on the roster, it appears that UCLA is on the short list of another Pennsylvanian.

Lancaster (Penn.) Catholic tight end Ryan Purvis (6-5, 235) took an official visit to Westwood the last weekend of September, and by all accounts, liked what he saw.

"I loved it," said Purvis. "Keith Carter was my host, and he is from Pennsylvania, too, so it was real cool to hang with him during the weekend."

Purvis came in on Saturday after playing on Friday night, and spent the day at the Rose Bowl. "The Rose Bowl was real cool. You see it on TV, but to get to be there in person was great. It's a beautiful stadium. I was watching the tight ends during the game, and you want to go to a school that makes the tight end a part of the offense. UCLA didn't disappoint me when it came to the tight end routes."

He left on Monday, but not after spending time with the coaching staff on Sunday. "I met the whole staff on Sunday. I really like them and really liked Coach (Karl) Dorrell. I spent time with him on Sunday. He is a good guy and knows what he is doing."

One question for Purvis was how he got on the recruiting list for UCLA, without going to any Nike camps and being from the other side of the country. "I guess they saw me on some lists, and Coach (Gary) Bernardi was recruiting my area and stopped by and liked me. I sent them some tapes, and then they offered. Coach Bernardi is a great guy, and I really like him a lot."

He has a half dozen offers right now, and a top three of UCLA, Pittsburgh and Boston College, in no particular order. "Stanford could be offering me this week, so if they do, they will make it a top four."

So far this season for Catholic, in a run-emphasized offense, Purvis has 20 catches for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. On defense, he has two sacks and a touchdown.

Purvis will be making an unofficial visit to Pittsburgh this weekend for the Notre Dame game, then will be taking an official to Boston College at some point. He may make another trip West depending on what happens with Stanford.

He hopes to make a decision by some time in November.

Purvis has a 3.8 GPA and an 1130 SAT score, fully qualifying him academically.
