The junior small forward from Arizona, Joey Shaw, has improved dramatically in the last several months and, as a result, now ranks among the top small forwards in the West Coast class of 2005. Would UCLA have a chance with a kid from Arizona?
, 6-6 JR SF Chandler (Ariz.) High, is a high-scoring prospect who can do damage from beyond the stripe or off slashes from the wing. He's very skinny, and will need to add weight/strength, but he has a very nice upside. With his intriguing ball skills, it's possible he ends up playing the two=guard position. He figures to be among the top wing prospects in the west for 2005.
We spoke with Shaw last weekend in Arizona and asked about the schools that had been out to see him at his high school this fall.
"Arizona State, Oregon State and San Diego State all came by my school," said Shaw. "I'm pretty much wide open now."
We asked if Shaw had any favorite schools growing up. "Kentucky and UCLA," said Shaw.
When asked to name three schools that he'd like to be recruited by, Shaw replied, "UCLA, Louisville and Duke."
Shaw said he thinks he'd like to go away for college. "I'd prefer to stay out west," said Shaw. "But I want to get out of Arizona."
We wondered if Shaw's parents had any feelings about him leaving home. "No, they don't care," said Shaw. "They just want the best spot for me."
Shaw talked about a few of the factors he'll consider when choosing a school. "The education and the people in front of me at my position," said Shaw. "I'd also like to be in big city."
Shaw said he has a 3.3 GPA.
