Robert Chai is a Bruin

One of the hottest prospects in the west, offensive linemen Robert Chai from Newport Beach, committed to UCLA on Sunday, making that commitment #14 for the Bruins...

Robert Chai, 6-4 270, Newport Beach (Calif.) Newport Harbor, verbally committed to UCLA yesterday.

Chai said he committed when UCLA offensive line coach Mark Weber called him. "He had offered me last week," Chai said, "And when he called yesterday I had talked it over with my mom and then I committed."

When UCLA offered Chai about a week ago, he was pretty sure he wanted to go to UCLA, but then this weekend sealed the deal. "When they offered me, I was about 80% sure that I wanted to go there. Then when I went to the game at the Rose Bowl this weekend that completely convinced me. The fans, the place was packed, and the Rose Bowl is a great place. I really like the area of UCLA's campus, the school, and the Rose Bowl. So, it wasn't hard."

Chai said he and his parents were very satisfied with getting a UCLA education, and his parents were especially happy that he could get it and stay close to home. "They're really excited that I'm staying close to home. UCLA is also really familiar. I had an uncle who went there and I have a bunch of friends who go there, too."

Chai said he chose UCLA over Colorado, Cal and Washington State. He said he'll take his only official visit to UCLA.

He has a 3.0 GPA and scored an 1100 on his SAT.
