Sampson Still Unsure

The running back from Tacoma, Washington, Shelton Sampson, verbally committed to UCLA last summer. But he's still unsure whether he'll take trips to other schools, which would violate UCLA's policy about players that are verbally committed...

Shelton Sampson, 5-10, 180, Tacoma (Wash.) Clover Park, said he's still unsure of whether he'll take official visits to schools other than UCLA.

"As of right now, I'm not really sure. My football season is over in two weeks and I'll think more about it then. It's hard to figure what I want to go with right now."

Sampson said he's aware of UCLA's policy that, if he's verbally committed, he can't take official visits to other schools. "Basically the policy is they want their recruits to be sure. And if they're sure they want them to just visit UCLA. I understand that. They told me that if I decide to take any other trips that they'd look at other recruits to fill the position."

Sampson has planned an official visit to UCLA for December 15th. He said he also, as of right now, has an official visit set for December 7th to Notre Dame and, if he decides to take other visits, intends to also visit Washington.

"I really like UCLA," Sampson said, obviously conflicted about the issue. "It's a great school. It's the place I admired when I was younger. I was in L.A. until I was nine. I have a lot of close relatives there. My uncle and grandmother, and cousins. It would great to play in front of them. I just have to decide whether I want to take more trips or not."

Sampson said the only two other schools he's interested in are Notre Dame and Washington, and that he's still talking to coaches from those schools. "Coach Neuheisel is a good coach and I get calls from him. Udub is a good school, and the team is good."

Sampson, who's run for about 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns in seven games this season, said he has around a 3.5 GPA but didn't pass the SAT the first time he attempted it. He intends to take it again in December.
