Velega Will Take More Time

Having already visited UCLA, Long Beach Poly cornerback prospect Byron Velega took an official visit to Oregon last weekend, and said he'll take two more official visits. He has a trio of favorites and said a recent development "helps UCLA"...

Back from his trip to Oregon, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly cornerback Byron Velega, 5-10, 180, maintains a top three, after three visits and two left to be taken.

"UCLA, Oregon and Washington State," Velega said were his favorites. "Cal is kind of at the bottom. I'm going to check out Arizona still too," said Velega.

Velega, who sports offers from all five aforementioned schools, was in Oregon this past weekend, and while the Ducks have been on his list for a while, the trip made a strong impression. "It was a great trip. Cold, but good though. A lot of guys were there, and a couple guys. The campus is real cool. Their facilities are awesome and the locker room, man."

Velega's trip to Eugene was his third official visit, having visited Cal and UCLA on consecutive weekends in December. "I'm going to Washington State this weekend, they have been on me a long time. Next weekend, I'm going to Arizona. I want to meet (head coach Mike) Stoops. He's done a real good job as a defensive backs coach at Oklahoma, put some guys in the league," said Velega.

One thing that recently has affected his decision is the departure of Matt Ware to the NFL Draft. "Oh yeah, that definitely made an impact. That means that job is wide open next year. Rodney (Van, fellow Long Beach Poly corner and UCLA commit) called me and told me about it and so did my coaches. That helps UCLA."

Velega has a timetable for his decision set. "I'll decide either February 1st or 2nd. Before signing day. I just want to take all five of my trips and check them all out. UCLA and Oregon, there was no pressure from the coaches to commit, but Cal, they pressured me a lot. I want to take my time and make the right decision," said Velega.

Recruiting Velega has been UCLA assistant Don Johnson, and his visit to the Poly campus this week was one that Velega took part in. "Coach Johnson came by and talked to me and Rodney. I've talked to Junior (Lemau'u) and Coach Johnson said he was on top of his school and doing what he needs to do. Rodney says if I go there, we'll have all kinds of guys on defense from Poly."
