Junior Prospect Mike Iupati

The teammate of a former UCLA commit, Anaheim (Calif.) Western junior lineman Mike Iupati is thought to be a potentially elite prospect. Iupati talks about his early recruitment...

After a fine junior season in which he was named a First Team All-CIF Division IX selection and helped lead Anaheim (Calif.) Western into the CIF Finals, defensive tackle Mike Iupati, 6-5, 280, is the next in line of Western defenders to get recruiting attention.

A teammate of former Bruin recruit and eventual Oregon State signee Will Price, Iupati had an outstanding junior campaign, racking up around 80 tackles and 12 sacks, despite often being double- and triple-teamed.

While it's early in the recruiting game, Iupati is already hearing from a handful of schools.

"Colorado, I hear from a lot. Cal-Berkeley, Oregon, UCLA, USC, they all have sent me letters," said Iupati.

Though he has no offers to date, Iupati plans to head to the Nike Camp at San Diego State in April, with hopes of putting up good numbers.

"I'm going to the Nike Camp. My coach didn't want me to go last year because he thought I was too young, but I can go this year, and I hope I do well."

Iupati knows that recruiting can take its toll, and after watching Price make an early commitment and then change, he is in no hurry to make a decision.

"I want to see what all is available, take some trips and see what's out there. I'll wait to see where all of my offers are too. I'm looking to possibly leave the area, but I could stay around too. I don't know."

Iupati has a 2.5 GPA and will take the SAT later this year.
