McCovey, along with fellow inside linebacker Luther Brown, form Southern California's best linebacking team. They finished 1-2 in tackles for the Lancers, and created plenty of havoc in the middle for Lancer opponents. "We've got the speed and the strength to dominate," said McCovey.
And while Brown is getting the most early attention, McCovey is no slouch either. McCovey is hearing from Oregon, Miami, UCLA and USC. "UCLA and USC have both offered me. Right now, I'm favoring USC, but it's early for me to be narrowing it down," said McCovey.
For UCLA, defensive line coach Don Johnson and linebacker coach Brian Schneider are recruiting McCovey.
Perhaps the one limitation on McCovey is his bulk, but the standout linebacker does admit that he intends to get bigger, much bigger, before going off to college. "I need to get a lot bigger before playing, especially if I want to play inside. I want to get up to about 225-230 before going to college."
He plans to attend the Nike Camp in San Diego in April as well as a camp at USC this weekend. However, he has no immediate plans to make a commitment, even with offers on the table.
"I'm in no hurry to make my decision. I'll wait until Signing Day. I want to see what's out there for me."
McCovey has a 2.5 GPA and will take the SAT in March.
