Cortes favors UCLA slightly over Notre Dame, USC, Arizona and Ohio St, but he doesn't have any scholarship offers. The Wildcats are recruiting him the hardest. "I'm getting a lot of handwritten letters from them," he said.
"I grew up watching USC and Ohio St. I like both their traditions and Ohio St is always on TV. I used to live in Columbus," said Rice. "And I love all the Heisman winners at USC. They always produce great RBs. They have a very good offense."
Cortes plans to attend the Junior Day at UCLA on Apr 17. "They get good publicity and they are tradition rich too. I think I'd be able to play early there."
Cortes has only visited the two Los Angeles schools, but says distance won't be a factor.
He missed five games as a junior due to a strained rotator cup and a broken finger, but still had 80 carries for 550 yds and six TDs. Cortes benches 285, squats 365 and has a VJ of 32.
"I have great vision and I'm big with good speed. I just have determination and work hard to get to the end zone. I'm going to be playing defense as a SR too, so I want to improve my conditioning. I also want to work on my pass blocking."
Rice said he has a 3.3 GPA and will take the SAT this spring.
