Safety Prospect Michael Samples

The 6-1, 185-pound safety prospect from Long Beach (Calif.) Cabrillo, Michael Samples, is getting attention from the Pac-10, including UCLA. While he says there is another school that leads for him, he talks up the contributions he could make to the UCLA football team...

Michael Samples, 6-1, 185, Long Beach (Calif.) Cabrillo, had 128 tackles and three interceptions as a junior. He was named first team all-league and second team Long Beach Press-Telegram Dream Team. Michael was also named his team's defensive player of the year.

His current top five are Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, UCLA, and San Diego State. The Ducks are his current favorite.

But UCLA is a very strong contender for him. He feels he can do big things if he were to take his game to Westwood.

"I really like UCLA because it is nearby," says Samples. "They have a great tradition there and I think if I went there I could make them a better team defensively." Coach Don Johnson is recruiting the free safety for the Bruins.

While he does not have any offers yet, Michael does not think they are too far off. "I have a feeling they are coming," he said.

If offers were given solely on attitude, he would already have a plethora. "I display a lot of leadership on the field and I have presence, period. I make the players around me better. I do not care if we are losing 41-0, I still think we are going to win. I have a lot of heart and character."

Samples will probably attend the UCLA one-day camp this summer and he is thinking about attending camps at Oregon and Cal, as well.

Michael carries a 3.3 core GPA and scored an 890 on his SAT. He is taking it again June 5th. He would like to major in something to do with Mathematics.
