Oceanside QB Prospect Derek Shaw

One of the few best quarterbacks in California this year is Oceanside's Derek Shaw. Shaw has about 30 offers, and he came by UCLA's four-day camp for a short time to show the UCLA coaches his talent...

Oceanside (Calif.) High quarterback prospect Derek Shaw (6-3, 200, 4.8) has received an offer from UCLA, according to his grandfather, former Capistrano Valley HS coach Dick Enright.

"After the USC camp ended, we went over to the UCLA camp and Derek threw just a little for their coaches," said Enright. "I heard Karl Dorrell say to Derek, 'We are offering you. You've got a scholarship to UCLA.'"

Enright went on: "Derek really likes the beautiful UCLA campus and the offensive coordinator (Tom Cable) at UCLA, but I really don't know who he really likes now. I don't know who his favorites are. He has about 30 offers I would say. They just keep coming in. But he didn't get one from USC, although I think they liked him."

In regard to USC, Enright said, "I know he also really likes Norm Chow. That guy is brilliant. (The subject of) USC came up when we were talking with a UCLA coach and he just said, 'Forget USC and Norm Chow.' But Chow is very smart. He only says a few things when he walks up to a kid, and then he walks away. But the things he says are always the right things. He's very calm and gifted."

Enright is definitely a good reference for Shaw to have in his family. "I played at USC and coached at Oregon," Enright said. "I coached Todd Marinovich and Todd had the same type of mental toughness as Derek. So did Dan Fouts at Oregon. He had that kind of toughness. These guys are all very tough mentally and physically. And that's what you have to have to be a really good quarterback -- the intangibles. You have to have the ability to fight back." <>p> It's been reported that Shaw has a 2.8 GPA.
