UCLA on New Hoops Prospect

UCLA basketball starts recruiting a new name, Tommy McMahon, a 6-7 forward from San Mateo (Calif.) Serra, who came to their camp this last summer. Will he visit officially and will UCLA offer?

Tommy McMahon, the 6-7 senior forward from San Mateo (Calif.) Serra, seemed to be down to UC Santa Barbara, Princeton and Penn, but a new school has entered the mix.

"UCLA is now recruiting me and I'm taking an official visit there this weekend," said McMahon. "I went to their camp earlier in the summer and they were talking about having me walk-on. I wasn't really interested in walking on, but they saw me at an open gym last week. (UCLA) Coach (Ben) Howland spoke with my Dad the next night and said they were now interested in me as a scholarship player."

McMahon went on to say, "I spoke with Coach Howland after that. He didn't actually offer me a scholarship, but he indicated that they planned on offering me during my trip there."

McMahon, who said he has a 4.0 GPA and scored 1270 on the SAT, has taken official visits to the other three schools. We asked how those trips went and he replied, "All three were a lot of fun -- they were all pretty much even."

We asked McMahon about the timing of his decision and he said, "I'll be ready to make my decision at the end of the weekend."

McMahon will arrive in Los Angeles Thursday evening, begin his official visit on Friday and return home on Sunday.
