Oatis is a Bruin

The #9-ranked safety prospect in the country, Shawn Oatis from Chino (Calif.) High, makes the call to UCLA this morning to tell the coaches he wants to be a Bruin

The #9-ranked safety in the country, Shawn Oatis, 6-0, 205, Chino (Calif.) High, verbally committed to UCLA this morning.

"Yes, Shawn did commit to UCLA this morning," Mrs. Oatis said. "And we're all very excited."

Mrs. Oatis said Shawn called UCLA assistant coach Dino Babers this morning to give him the good news.

Oatis had taken official visit to UCLA, Notre Dame and Ohio State, and had many scholarship offers.

Oatis took his visit to UCLA this last weekend and had great things to say about it early this week. "It's close to home and they are a good program, on the up and up. Being an hour away takes away the homesick factor. Guys out of state get that, and they are not able to perform at their top level cause they are not focused. Here, I'm an hour away from home and have a good support factor. It would be nice for my family to come out here and watch me, as well as my friends and coaches. I look at it as giving back to the people who've given me a lot."

Oatis has had a stellar senior season.

He also carries a 4.1 GPA and scored a 960 on his SAT, easily qualifying him by NCAA standards.
