Recently, UCLA officially offered him, which was enough to give McCovey interest in the Bruins.
"Yeah, if I were to stay local, UCLA would be a real good possibility," said McCovey.
For now, McCovey said he has a top four, which doesn't include the Bruins, but that doesn't necessarily count them out.
"My top schools are Oklahoma, Miami, Oregon State and California," said McCovey. "I know I will visit those four schools. UCLA, I may take an unofficial there since it's close, but I don't know where my fifth official would be. It may be there. Basically, I'm just hearing more from UCLA right now, so I would need to know more but because they are close to home, I'm looking at them."
In the meantime, McCovey said he would worry about recruiting and taking his trips after Lakewood's season.
Their lone loss this year was to Long Beach Poly, and McCovey is hoping for another shot at them. If they were to meet, it would be in the CIF Division I Finals. But first things first. "We got the defending champs this week (Loyola). We need to take care of business this weekend. Losing to Poly really focused us."
On the year, McCovey has 91 tackles and five sacks.
He was recently invited to the CaliFlorida Bowl and said he would most likely play in it.
McCovey has a 2.5 GPA and is retaking the SAT.
