Lockett Gets Unusual Offer

The athlete from Diamond Bar (Calif.) High, Bret Lockett, gets presented with an intriguing proposition by the UCLA coaches on his official visit this weekend...

Before he visited UCLA, Diamond Bar (Calif.) receiver/safety Bret Lockett (6-2, 195) said an offer from UCLA would probably end with a commitment from him to play there.

Lockett did, in fact, get an offer from UCLA, but he didn't commit. "They offered me on Wednesday before my trip. I was set to commit, but then I talked to them on the trip and they said they wanted me to greyshirt," Lockett said. "I really have to think about it now. I was all set to come in and try and get in the two-deep in the fall, but now I have to think about this."

The news of the greyshirt aside, Lockett said his trip to UCLA was excellent. "(Linebacker) Wesley Walker was my host and I got to meet a lot of the younger guys and all the recruits. A lot of the recruits I'm playing with in the CaliFlorida Bowl. I'm real excited to be playing in that. The guys I met I'm real cool with, and fit in real well with."

Lockett has four other offers, from Arizona, Utah, Oregon State and Boise State. But Lockett said it was basically down to UCLA and Arizona.

Locket elaborated: "I may take another trip to Oregon State (January 7th), but I'm not sure. I'll probably decide around the time of the CaliFlorida game. It's going to come down to Arizona and getting to go in the fall, or UCLA and the strong academics and close to home. I know my mom and dad still really want me to go to UCLA, because they say I can't get a better education than that."

Lockett is being recruited by UCLA assistant coach Eric Bieniemy but said one of the trip highlights was meeting the whole staff. "I got to meet with Coach (Dino) Babers and Coach (Gary) DeLoach, since I'm being recruited as an athlete. Coach Dorrell, he is a real good coach and a real good person."

Lockett has a 3.07 GPA and will take the SAT in November.
