Great Matchup: Mike Roll V. Chase Budinger

The high school senior wing committed to UCLA, Mike Roll of Aliso Niguel, faced off against the junior wing UCLA has offered, Chase Budinger, in a San Diego tourney Monday night...

Mike Roll, the 6-4 senior shooting guard from Aliso Viejo (Calif.) Aliso Niguel, faced Chase Budinger, the 6-6 junior small forward from Encinitas (Calif.) La Costa Canyon, Monday night in the first round of the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic Tournament.

Roll, of course, signed a National Letter of Intent with UCLA in November, and the Bruins have also offered Budinger a scholarship.

Aliso Niguel, behind Roll, beat La Costa Canyon and Budinger in overtime, in an exciting game.

Roll finished with 31 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists and two steals while Budinger put up 22 points and 6 rebounds.

Both players had very good games.

Roll was exceptional, playing while still ill, on antibiotics and having experienced migraine headaches from a sinus infection. Even so, Roll exhibited some very advanced skills, hitting four threes, and array of shots. It's the second time we've seen Roll this season and he again displayed a very advanced feel for the game and mature skills, and a great energy level and heart.

Roll is a throw-back type of player, who doesn't have explosive hops but is so effective because of his skill level.

It was also the second time we had seen Budinger this season, and he showed a better shooting touch and scoring sense.

UCLA Head Coach Ben Howland was in attendance.

Video highlights of the matchup will be up on the site soon...
