Could 6-8 Jessie Byrd Walk On?

Jesse Byrd, the senior 6-8 post from Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O'Dowd, has offers from some D-1 programs, including a Big Ten school. There is a possibility he could walk on at UCLA, which would be a big coup for the Bruins...

Jessie Byrd, 6-7 SR PF Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O'Dowd, is very talented and he's academically qualified.

However, Byrd wasn't completely satisified with his options in the fall and he decided to wait until the spring to choose a college. Based on what we saw this week at the Torrey Pines tournament, we think Byrd will have plenty of options in April.

We spoke with Byrd on Monday and asked him about the schools on his list.

"Fresno State and Lehigh are also involved."

Byrd has taken visits to UC Santa Barbara and Lehigh. We asked if there are other schools he knows he'd like to visit.

"I want to visit Penn State," said Byrd. "I'd like to visit UCLA, but we'll see how that goes."

We asked Byrd which schools have offered scholarships and he replied, "All of them have offered except for UCLA. They might want me to walk on, but I'd prefer to get a scholarship somewhere right now."

Sources close to Byrd have indicated that Byrd's family could want him to walk on at UCLA.

Byrd told us he has a 2.7 GPA and scored 1140 on the SAT.
