But McCovey is now strongly considering the idea of playing close to home and will visit UCLA this coming weekend.
Even more, he said if the trip goes well, the Bruins will have a very strong shot at signing him. "I'm liking all of the schools right now. If I like what I see at UCLA, then they could be the school I go with," said McCovey. "They have been coming on lately, and it's close to home, which is important to my family."
So far, McCovey has tripped to Arizona, Oklahoma and Oregon State. After visiting Westwood this week, he will trip to Miami next weekend. "I'm liking Miami, but they've signed a lot of backers already. Oregon State was a good trip, a little snow and cold. I'm looking forward to UCLA and better weather, though. After I trip to Miami, I'll decide."
McCovey is an inside linebacker, but said ideally he would like to put some weight on to play at that position. Otherwise, he doesn't mind playing outside. "Let me tell you this, wherever I play, I'll make plays. I can rise above the competition. I'm looking forward to getting to college and showing what I can do."
McCovey finished the year with around 110 tackles in leading Lakewood to the CIF Division I semifinals, where they lost to Los Alamitos. In fact, their two losses this year came to the finalists of the Division I game, Long Beach Poly and Los Alamitos.
McCovey has a 2.5 GPA and is retaking the SAT. UCLA has offered McCovey a scholarship.
