He is Travis Goethel (6-3, 220), from Vista (Calif.) High.
The last linebacker UCLA got from San Diego, you might remember, turned out pretty well. Brandon Chillar became a three-year starter for the Bruins and is now in St. Louis playing for the Rams.
Goethel attended UCLA's Junior Day in March, spending time with linebacker coach and defensive coordinator Larry Kerr, as well as his recruiter Brian Schneider.
"It was a good trip, Goethel said. "UCLA has a nice campus and I like the area. The facilities are nice too. I met Coach Dorrell, and he's a pretty good guy."
"My top schools are Michigan, UCLA and USC," said Goethel. "I'm getting recruited as a linebacker, and I prefer inside, though I can play outside, since I did as a sophomore."
He will attend the Nike Camp in Los Angeles later this month, and is hoping to attend the Michigan Camp later this summer.
Goethel said a few things stand out to him in terms of factors in his decision. "The football program and playing time are big. But so is the education and the school itself. And the location, too," said Goethel.
He won't be making a decision soon, but did say he could decide sometime during the season, if not right after. "I just want to take some trips, and see some of the campuses before I decide," said Goethel.
As a junior, Goethel recorded 90-plus tackles, 5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions and 1 interception for a touchdown. He also played tight end for Vista.
Goethel carries a 3.0 GPA and will take the SAT in May.
