Tight End Working for Offers

The tight end prospect from Upland, Calif., John Reese, is trying hard to garner scholarship offers, especially from his favorite school...

UCLA will bring in three tight ends in the Class of 2005, but with the upcoming graduation of Marcedes Lewis and the very real possibility that none of their incoming tight ends will end up at the position, the Bruin staff is still recruiting tight ends.

Upland (Calif.) High tight end John Reese (6-4, 215) is one of their key targets, and while UCLA hasn't offered him a scholarship, the heavy interest has been mutual.

"I had family that played there. My cousin Devon Reese (former UCLA receiver) used to go there and I always wanted to go there and play," said Reese. "If they offered me, I don't know if I'd commit right away, I'd probably take some time, but I really like them a lot and would like to play there."

Aside from UCLA, Reese's top five includes Oregon, Boise State, Fresno State and Washington.

Reese attended UCLA's Skills Camp and the opportunity to work with Coach Jon Embree stood out to him. "Coach Embree is a great coach and it shows in his players. He knows how to coach tight ends. I've talked with Marcedes Lewis a lot, too. He's a really good player and he encourages me to keep working hard and tells me how great it is to play for Coach Embree."

Reese attended the Nike Camp in Los Angeles, where he was one of the standouts at tight end. He clocked a 4.8 40-yard dash but said he's around a 4.7 typically.

"It was a good day for me there at Nike," Reese said. "I did okay in the testing but I really stood out during the one-on-ones."

With no scholarship offers, Reese said the camps will be important for him, and he's hoping to start receiving some offers as a result.

Reese is planning to go to the Fresno State Camp, the Oregon Camp and the UCLA 4-Day Camp and also plans to attend the Scout Combine next month.

Academically, Reese has a 3.0 GPA and will take the SAT on May 7th.
