UCLA Double-Teams Linebacker

Jonathan Cornell, the 6-2, 210-poundl linebacker from La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat, has two UCLA representatives recruiting him -- UCLA coach Eric Bieniemy and his teammate, committed offensive lineman Brandon Bennett...

With one commitment from a La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat junior (offensive lineman Brandon Bennett), UCLA recruiting coordinator Eric Bieniemy continues to mine his alma mater for the Class of 2006.

Linebacker Jonathan Cornell (6-1 ½, 210) is the target for the Bruins and while UCLA is no longer his clear favorite, they still are atop his Top 5.

"I still like UCLA, but I also like Notre Dame, Texas, Oklahoma and USC. I'm starting to get a lot a mail from Notre Dame lately," said Cornell.

Cornell also is hearing from Georgia Tech, Kansas and LSU aside from his top five.

Bieniemy is actively recruiting Cornell, as is Bennett, his teammate and close friend. He said, "Coach Bieniemy and I still talk, and Brandon and I talk a lot, too. He's one of my best friends, it would be cool to play with him in college, but I have to see what my best options are."

Cornell attended the Nike Camp in Los Angeles and though he still tested, he was hampered by an injured foot. "I stepped on a nail right before the Nike Camp, and it was bothering me. I still ran a 4.5 forty, but I could have had a 4.4 I think. I didn't even do the shuttle though," said Cornell.

He also recorded a 31-inch vertical and 19 reps on the bench.

Cornell's next camp is the Scout Combine next month.

As a junior, Cornell totaled over 100 tackles, including a 15-tackle effort against Loyola. He also had an interception and gained 68 yards on fake punts.

Academically, Cornell said he is improving a great deal. "I'm getting As and Bs now. I'm taking it a lot more serious. I've got the SAT in June and I want to get myself qualified so I can focus on football this summer."
