Louisiana Back Looks at UCLA

New Orleans (LA.) Holy Cross running back Moncell Allen is hearing from the Pac-10, SEC, Big 12 and more, and he likes a certain UCLA assistant coach...

Two years ago, UCLA went down late to New Orleans to take a seldom talked-about running back in Chris Markey. Running backs coach Eric Bieniemy has returned to the Crescent City and is actively recruiting New Orleans (LA.) Holy Cross running back Moncell Allen (5-8, 228).

"Coach Bieniemy came by the school this week and I saw him and was shocked that he was the size he was. I didn't think he really played in the NFL at that size. He's the same size as me," said Allen.

Allen said that UCLA is one of the schools he is hearing from a great deal, along with USC, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, LSU and Ole Miss, who gave him his lone scholarship offer.

"Those are my top schools right now. I want to go out of state for school, but if LSU offered me, that might change things a bit. But I think the opportunity to go out of state is good," said Allen. "UCLA is a school I'm going to really look at. I like Coach Bieniemy. He's a great person and a great coach. I've gotten to know him real well."

He is also familiar with several Bruin players, the Louisiana natives, specifically Markey and Chris Horton. He said, "I know Chris (Markey) from when he was at Jesuit. UCLA has got some guys from down here."

Allen said that several coaches have told him they have liked his film, but have hesitated to offer him. "They've said they like what they've seen on my tapes, but they want to see me at the camps and combines and then they'll decide. So I'll just go to the camps and do well," he said.

Allen will be at the Scout Combine at Tulane on May 21st and will also be attending LSU's Camp this summer. Other than those, he hasn't firmed up any plans.

During his junior year, Allen rushed for 1,300 yards and 17 touchdowns for Holy Cross.

Allen said he will not rush to make a decision, though he could commit to a school and still take some visits. He said, "If the right school came along, I could commit, and then take some visits to make sure. But I'm not making one till I make some trips."

Allen has a 2.5 GPA and will take the ACT later this spring.
