UCLA Targets L.A. Area Safety

Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne safety Major Culbert (5-11 ½, 195) has used a good spring camp run to get five scholarship offers by the end of May.

To date, UCLA, Nebraska, San Jose State, San Diego State and UNLV have all extended offers to Culbert, and in addition to that quintet, he is hearing often from Washington, Oregon, Oregon State, USC, Fresno State and Colorado.

"I'm really wide open right now," Culbert said. "I like UCLA a lot because they are close to home and Nebraska because they have a good program all the time. Of the other schools that haven't offered, I like USC, California, Colorado and Oregon a lot too," said Culbert.

With both UCLA and USC recruiting Culbert, a Los Angeles native, you might assume his preference would be to stay close to his family. But that isn't the case. "I actually want to get out of the area. It's time for me to do things on my own and stop relying on my mom. I want to try and see some things outside of L.A. I grew up a Michigan fan, and they are recruiting me a little too."

UCLA assistant coach Jon Embree is recruiting Culbert. "I like Coach Embree a lot. They said I am one of their top safety recruits, and that I could possibly come in early and play. If I decide to stay close to home, UCLA is a great option for me."

Culbert has been to the Scout.com Combine and the Nike Camp this Spring. At the Scout Combine, he ran a 4.77 forty and jumped 31 inches. "I didn't really like how I did in the testing. I thought I did better in the drills and one-on-ones," he said.

Culbert plans to attend the UNLV and Cal camps this summer, and could make a college decision before the season starts. He said, "I might make an early decision. I want to take some trips, but then I want to decide so I can focus on my year."

As a junior, Culbert tallied 80 tackles (59 solo) while also getting 6 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries and a pair of interceptions. On offense as a running back he had 1,121 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Culbert has a 2.6 core GPA and is awaiting the results from his first attempt at the SAT.
