Mohamed Abukar, 6-9 C San Diego (Calif.) Rancho Bernardo, is a skilled big man with a very nice shooting touch. Still somewhat slender, Abukar needs to add strength and play with more aggressiveness, but he's got a chance to be among the better post players in the west.
We spoke with Abukar last night and he told us that Georgia, Kentucky and Kansas have been showing him the most interest so far. We asked if he would characterize those schools as his leaders and Abukar said, "well, those are the schools I know the most about right now."
When we asked if there were others schools in the mix, Abukar replied, "I'm still looking at UCLA -- I'm going up there for their game Thursday against Oregon St."
Abukar listed his relationship with the coach, and the opportunity to play right away, as primary factors in his decision. "I don't want to put myself in a situation where I'll have to sit for awhile," Abukar said. Abukar also said that he'd like to play in an up-tempo system and one where "they let big men step outside to shoot."
Abukar told us that he plans on taking a couple trips in the spring, as well as taking some unofficial visits during the summer if he's at an AAU tournament that's near a school he's considering. He said that he's seen the campuses of UCLA, Duke and North Carolina when he was playing in past AAU events.
We questioned him about the timing of his decision and Abukar replied, "I think I'll know by the end of summer where I want to go."
Abukar told us he'll take the SAT in March and he's on track to qualify.
