One of the places Turpin liked a lot early on was UCLA. "I really liked them early but then they offered some other defensive ends. But if they got some more interest in me, I'd be real interested in them," said Turpin.
Turpin likened his situation to the one his former teammate, John Hale went through last year, before signing with the Bruins this past February.
"It's just driving me more. It happened to John last year and other guys that they just need to show what they can do on the field and people realize they can play. I wanted to wait anyway and wasn't planning to commit early. So now I can get a better look at my options," said Turpin.
Turpin attended both the Scout.com and Nike Camps this spring as well as UCLA's One-Day camp in April. He also was at both UCLA's and USC's Junior Days.
"I ran 4.9, did 27 reps on the bench and did 27.5 on the vertical, but I think the one-on-ones is where I showed my strength," said Turpin, who is being recruited by UCLA assistant coach Jon Embree.
During the 2004 season, Turpin had 49 tackles with 8 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles for the Griffins, who lost to Long Beach Poly in the CIF Division I finals. About that game, he said, "It haunts me still. It's been driving us this off-season," Turpin said.
Academically, Turpin has a 2.85 GPA and scored a 1400 on the new SAT.
