The six offers come from Nebraska, Utah, Colorado, Oregon State, UCLA and hometown San Diego State. In addition, Notre Dame has shown strong interest and is just waiting for an improvement on the SAT before they officially extend an offer.
"My top five is Utah, Nebraska, Notre Dame, San Diego State and UCLA," said Goethel. "I'm visiting Utah when they play Air Force (September 24th) but that's my only official visit so far."
Goethel kept himself active this summer with passing leagues as well as a camp at USC. During the spring, he attended the Scout.com Combine and Nike Camp. At the Scout.com Combine, Goethel clocked a 4.66 in the forty, one of the better times for the linebackers, and also a 4.44 shuttle time, while looking very good in the one-on-one drills.
"I didn't get a chance to take any unofficial trips, other than one to San Diego State during a passing tournament," Goethel said.
Goethel said he hopes to attend the UCLA-San Diego State game on September 3rd at Qualcomm Stadium, where two of his top five square off.
"I'm not going to make a decision until sometime during or after the season. I want to take all of my trips," said Goethel.
The constant activity this summer caught up with Goethel. He suffered a pull groin that limited him the past two months.
"But I'm back going full speed. It's the second week of two-a-days for us, and once we got back I started going full speed," said Goethel.
Goethel will again line up as the Will linebacker for Vista, and while he just missed 100 tackles last season, he said that isn't even his goal for this year. "My goal for this season is to be smarter on the field, and keep picking up the tempo. The rest will come. And I want to get our team to Qualcomm (for the San Diego Section Championships)," said Goethel.
During his junior year, Goethel recorded 90-plus tackles, 5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions and 1 interception for a touchdown. He also played tight end for Vista.
Goethel carries a 3.0 GPA and took the SAT in the spring, though he intends to take it again in the fall.
