Sleeper Has Nine Offers

He's a defensive end/linebacker prospect that you haven't heard much about, even though he has nine scholarship offers and is taking his first official visit this weekend. He's visited UCLA's practices in the past...

A prospect flying under the radar in Southern California is Escondido (Calif.) San Pasqual defensive end Marquez Herrod (6-3, 225), who holds nine scholarship offers and is set to make his first official visit this weekend.

"I'm going to Utah this weekend for an official trip. They play Utah State. I also think UCLA is going to offer me this week," said Herrod.

Herrod holds offers from Boise State, Oregon State, Fresno State, Washington State, Utah, UTEP, Arizona, Nevada and Arizona State, while Oregon could also be close to offering. USC has also shown some interest in him.

College coaches could begin calling recruits again September 1st, and Herrod's phone was busy. "I got calls this week from Oregon, Utah, Washington, UTEP and UCLA," said Herrod.

Herrod, who visited UCLA's practices last spring, said his top three schools were Utah, UCLA and Oregon State, but that it will likely come down to two schools. "If I get the offer from UCLA, I'll probably decide between Utah and UCLA after my trip," said Herrod, who is being recruited by UCLA receivers coach Dino Babers.

During the summer, Herrod attended the Arizona Camp as well as the Nike Camp in Los Angeles last spring. At the Nike Camp, he clocked a 4.65 forty, did 20 reps on the bench and jumped 28 inches.

Now, he's set for his senior year on the field to start. "I'm definitely excited. We open this Friday against Mt. Carmel. I'm ready to start playing," said Herrod.

Herrod said he wants to decide early so he can focus on school and his season, and to ensure he has a scholarship. "I don't want a school to run out of scholarships and pull mine because I waited to long," said Herrod.

During his junior year, he had 62 tackles and five sacks. He also ran track, running the 200m, 400m, 4x100 and 4x400.

Academically, Herrod holds a 4.1 GPA and scored a 1290 on the new SAT.
