Okwo Has Leader(s)

The highly-regarded linebacker from Manhatttan Beach, Michael Okwo, talks at the Nike Camp about his recruitment, letting us in on the two schools leading for him, and which one of those holds the edge...

Michael Okwo, LB, 6-0, 205, Manhattan Beach (Calif.) Mira Costa, participated in the Nike Camp Saturday, and fared well.

Okwo is considered one of the top linebacker prospects in Southern California, and is also very highly regarded because of his academics.

"An education is one of the things that's really important to me," said Okwo, who has a 3.52 core GPA and scored a 1210 on his SAT.

UCLA and Stanford have both offered him a scholarship. And he says those two schools are the two he's looking at the most seriously. "UCLA right now is my favorite," Okwo said. "And Stanford is close." Okwo also said he's considering USC, others in the Pac-10, Michigan and Michigan State.

Having been to UCLA's Junior Day, Okwo also visited a UCLA practice and campus last week. "It was great to go to a practice. I didn't get enough time, though, last week, so I'm going to go again and sit in on some meetings. UCLA, though, has some advantages. There are some guys on the team from the South Bay that I know. It's close, and it's a great education."

Okwo said he didn't think he'd commit any time soon, but that you never know. "My feeling is that I'd like to wait a bit," he said. "See what happens, see what happens with the teams and coaches during the season. It's tempting but I think I'll try to wait it out. It's the smart thing to do for me I think."
