Will Barrett Stay Local?

One of the most highly recruited tight ends in the country, Chris Barrett of Tustin, talks about what's important to him in picking a school -- and staying close to home is a priority...

Chris Barrett, 6-5, 225, Tustin (Calif.) High, is one of the most recruited tight ends in the country. He has a very close family, and says he will attend college so they can see him play. "I want to stay local because my mom and all of my family is out here, but I'm going to take my trips out east and north," Barrett said. "My mom wants me to go to UCLA. That's her favorite school."

He is hearing from a number of schools, including Washington, Arizona St., Florida, Syracuse, Michigan, Nebraska, UCLA, USC, Oregon, Colorado, Colorado State, and Washington St., but Barrett says there are two schools that are definitely working very hard to get him. "UCLA and USC are recruiting me the hardest right now. It's a battle between them," he said. "The schools I'm most interested in right now are UCLA, USC, Washington, Oregon, Florida and Arizona State."

As far as offers, Barrett has received them from UCLA, USC, Washington, Washington State, Arizona St. and Colorado St.

Barrett did not attend the Los Angeles Nike Camp. "I'm going to the Nike Camp (May 18) at Stanford." He made a great impression last year in Palo Alto, where he was considered one of the best prospects at the camp, and he hopes to do the same this year. His summer schedule is shaping up as well. "I'll be at the UCLA one-day camp and the Arizona St. one-day camp this summer. Right now it looks like those will be the only camps I go to."

When asked about his heavily recruited Tustin teammate OL Sam Baker, Barrett said, "He is one of my best friends. He is very cool. There is about a 95-percent chance that we will go to the same school."

Barrett and Baker attended the UCLA spring scrimmage game together. "That was pretty cool. I really liked watching the UCLA offense." During the scrimmage UCLA ran a number of plays to the tight ends.

Barrett is scheduled to take the SAT in June. He carries a 2.8 core GPA.
