Prospect Evaluations: QBs

Hey, everyone is ranking players, so why shouldn't BRO? Here are the rankings of the top quarterbacks UCLA is recruiting, including Dennis Dixon, Kyle Wright, Tom Grady and Johnny DuRocher...

UCLA is pursuing some of the best quarterbacks in the country. Kyle Wright, Dennis Dixon, Johnny DuRocher, and Chris Leak are readily accepted among the top 10 in the nation, while Richard Kovalcheck, Tom Grady, Clayton Richard and Robert Lane have a very good chance to be numbered among the top 10.

These are players I've seen on tape and in person, or both.  This is, of course, just my opinion, but here's the BRO ranking of the quarterbacks UCLA is pursuing:

1. Kyle Wright, 6-3, 200, Danville (Calif.) Monte Vista. He gets the nod as the best all-around, while he doesn't necessarily do one thing the best. He's just so polished, looking like a college quarterback already, with great poise, a strong arm, good touch, and good presence. He doesn't seem to get rattled and break down.   Probably the only negative I can come up with against Wright is, at the CaliFlorida Passing competition, he looked solid, but not fantastic.

1A. Dennis Dixon, 6-4, 185, San Leandro (Calif.) High. Probably has the most potential among the guys I've seen on the west coast.  He looks very much like a young Randall Cunningham, with the lankiness, athleticism and very impressive arm strength.  He's still pretty raw, and he breaks down when pressured. He was cleary the best prospect at the CaliFlorida passing competition.

3. Johnny DuRocher, 6-4, 200, Spanaway (Wash.) Bethel  Really a stud, both physically and from a quarterback standpoint. He has a strong arm, throws accurate balls and can put touch on them.  He moves well, with very good feet for his size.

4. Chris Leak, 6-1, 210, Charlotte (North Carolina) Independence. Athletic, he's a double-threat to throw and run.  His quickness and escapability make him very dangerous, but then he has a very nice arm, has a great feel for when to make certain kinds of throws and throws very accurately.  And again, his shiftiness is unmatched on this list.

5.  Richard Kovalcheck, 6-3, 200, San Diego (Calif.) St. Augustine. He's listed at 6-3, and most of the time a prospect listed at 6-3 is probably 6-2. But he looks all of 6-3 and maybe taller.  He has a great arm, able to throw accurate darts.  He underwent knee surgery last year and many are still wondering how his mobility will be this year, but on film before the injury, he looked very mobile and quick for his size.  But you keep going back to the arm. He probably doesn't have all the passes down, particularly those that require touch, but he throws one of the prettiest balls around.

6. Tom Grady, 6-6, 210, Huntington Beach (Calif. ) Edison.  The knock against him is how darn tall he is. But honestly, it doesn't seem to hinder him at all. In fact, I think he uses it quite effectively to be able to see the field better. Grady has a very nice arm and throws probably the most accurate ball among the guys on this list.  He actually moves better than you would think for how tall he is.  If he can add weight and get stronger, he could end up among the couple few best on this list downt the line.

7. Clayton Richard,  6-5, 220, Lafayette (Ind.) McCutcheon.  Good size and a solid arm, Richard looks like a college quarterback on tape. He moves just okay and, for his size, you would think he might have a little more heat on his throws.  He also, sometimes, isn't as polished as he could be.

8. Robert Lane, 6-3, 200, Monroe (Louisiana) Neville. A kid with good size, Lane has a good arm and good mobility. He's a potential Elite 11 quarterback because of his combination of size, arm strength and athleticism. He's not as good as the others at the top of the list but still probably among the top 10-15 quarterbacks in the nation.

*Marcus Johnson, 6-4, 210, Los Angeles (Calif.) Locke.  He's not a quarterback, but is an exceptional athlete, and could make for a great tight end possibly.  The problem is that he's insisting he be recruited as a quarterback.

Other Scouted That Are On BRO's Recruiting List:

Eric Vose, 6-2, 190, Westlake Village (Calif.) Westlake
Beau Budde, 6-4, 195, San Clemente (Calif.) High
Sam Keller, 6-4, 205, Danville (Calif.) San Ramon
Leon Jackson, 6-2, 190, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly
