Ibekwe Update

Ekene Ibekwe, the 6-9 lanky post player from Carson, played in a local tournament last weekend, and he gave us an update on his recruitment...

Ekene Ibekwe, 6-9 JR PF, Carson (Calif.) High, has seen his recruitment pick up in the last month, due to a few good showings at various spring tournaments. He was recently offered a scholarship by national champion, Maryland. Other schools at the top of his list beside Arizona and Maryland, are USC, North Carolina, Kentucky and Oregon. He said that, besides Maryland, USC has offered, while the others have indicated they're preparing to offer him soon. He also said that, during the spring contact period, Kansas and Georgia also came out to see him.

When asked if he has a leader, Ibekwe said, "No, not at this point. I'm interested in all of them. I really like all of them and I'll try to narrow it down this summer. I'll sit down with my parents."

He said he'll probably wait to take his four other official visits, but he wasn't sure. "I don't know, I think I want to wait to take those, but you never know, I could take one sooner if it comes up."

When asked specifically why UCLA wasn't on his list, Ibekwe said that he does hear from them, but doesn't feel they have him as a top priority. "I like UCLA as well as any of them," he said. "But I just haven't heard from them as much as the other schools."

He said he carries around a 3.1 GPA. He took the SAT in May and is awaiting his results.
