Jarvis Moss Likes the Attention

Even though he says he's humble, the athletic defensive end prospect from Texas, Jarvis Moss, likes the recruiting attention. He talks about his early favorites. Is UCLA among them?

Jarvis Moss, 6-6, 225, Denton (Tex.) Ryan, is looking like one of the premier defensive end prospects in the country. As a junior he totaled 122 tackles, 52 tackles for a loss and 28 sacks for a team that won the 4-A Texas state championship. This spring, he's been impressing many college coaches with his athleticism and quickness, and might very well be among the top two or three national prospects at his position. He said he patterns his game after the NFL's Jevon Kearse because "he knows how to get to the quarterback."

UCLA was one of the first to offer Moss. He's also received scholarship offers from Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. He maintains that his early favorites are Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Texas and UCLA, but also says he's wide open and doesn't have a preference about staying close to home or going away to school.

Moss is a kid who has a lot of personality and admits he likes the recruiting attention. "I don't like the frustation part of it, trying to figure out where to go, but I like all the attention, the phone calls, the letters." He also says he's pretty humble off the field, doesn't like to brag, but definitely likes the recruiting attention.

And coincidentally, he's been getting quite a bit of it. A steady stream of coaches have come by his school during the current spring evaluation period to watch him work out. Moss said that UCLA has sent him a good amount of letters and a UCLA coach had been by his school in the last couple of weeks.

Moss said the first thing he was looking for in a program were the coaches. "I want to feel very comfortable with the coaches," he said. "The school itself is important. I just want to be comfortable at the place where I'm going to spend the next four or five years."

Immediate playing time, Moss said, isn't that big of a factor. "I want the opportunity to compete, but if I have to redshirt I know I can learn a lot."

His cousin is the Denton Ryan quarterback, James Battle, and the two are very close – so close they talk about going to the same college together.

An all-around athlete, he also plays basketball and soccer (goalie) for his high school teams. "I wouldn't mind walking on to the basketball team in college," he said.

Having never been to California, Moss talks like he almost assuredly will visit UCLA officially. He said, "When I get out there for my visit, I want to see the school and what to see how comfortable I feel there. I can't wait to get there. I've heard it's beautiful. So, I hope I can get along with everyone there."

He said he has a 2.8 GPA and will take the ACT June 8th.
