Stanback is Taking His Time

Chace Stanback, 6-6 JR SF Los Angeles (Calif.) Fairfax, is a gifted player who has a chance to be recruited at the highest level. Long and lean, he's got a nice shot to three-point range, as well as a very good feel for the game. He needs to improve his ability to get his own shot, but there's no question he's among the top wings in the west for 2007.

Chace's father, Harry Stanback, has been reluctant to let his son speak to the media, as he doesn't want Chace being distracted from his academics or basketball. However, Mr. Stanback did talk with us briefly last night about his son's recruitment.

We asked Mr. Stanback if there is a list of schools that Chace is currently considering.

"No, he doesn't have a list," said Mr. Stanback. "When the time comes, he'll narrow it down to 10 schools or so that he's interested in. Probably before next season."

When questioned about schools that have been out to see Chace at practices or games this season, Mr. Stanback replied, "They came out last year --Roy Williams, Lute Olson, some others -- but I've only seen Ben Howland out this year."

Mr. Stanback indicated that he doesn't anticipate his son will make an early decision.

"He won't be taking any unofficial visits," said Mr. Stanback. "He's been to UCLA for a couple games, but he won't be going anywhere on unofficial visits. He's just going to focus on getting better and he'll take official visits when the time is right."

Mr. Stanback noted that Chace has to keep his grades up in order to play.

"We made a pact," said Mr. Stanback. "He has to keep his GPA over 3.0 if he wants to play basketball."
