Walker Already Paying Dividends?

We've heard some information about new Defensive Coordinator DeWayne Walker possibly already being instrumental in the recruitment of an elite defensive back from the class of 2007...

UCLA's new defensive coordinator, DeWayne Walker, could already be paying dividends in recruiting, according to sources.

It's early, but it's thought that one of the best defensive back prospects in the 2007 west coast class is 5-8 Courtney Viney from Fresno (Calif.) Edison.

BRO's Brandon Huffman did a recent story on Viney when he saw him in the U.S. Army All-American Combine in San Antonio (Story), where Viney was named to the All-Combine team.

Viney comes from Edison, a high school with a very good UCLA history, with alums like Ricky Manning and Brandon Breazell.

But the Walker connection might prove to be instrumental. Walker, reportedly, is close with Edison's defensive back coach, Tom Perry. Perry has coached at DeWayne Walker's annual summer camp for defensive backs.

It's known also that UCLA offensive coordinator Tom Cable has spent time in Fresno recently.

Cal, Nebraska and Washington State have already offered Viney a scholarship, and there are conflicting reports of whether UCLA has. If a UCLA offer hasn't been given to Viney as of yet, it's believed that one is forthcoming, and that Viney would seriously weigh an early commitment to UCLA.
